Aceh Earthquake

Disaster returned to Aceh province in 2013, when a magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck. The lives of 39 residents were lost, with more than 2,500 injured and 52,000 displaced. According to the United Nations, the displaced people were about 28 per cent of the population.

The relief efforts were difficult, with the worst damage in remote areas and road access and communications damaged.

In 2004, a magnitude 9.1 quake struck Aceh, triggering a huge tsunami. The disaster killed more than 230,000 people in 13 countries around the Indian Ocean.
